U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.44%

U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.44%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Utilities, Telecoms and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.44% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.00%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.18%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 2.33% or 7.01 points to trade at 307.31 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 2.05% or 3.63 points to end at 180.34 and JPMorgan Chase&Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 2.02% or 3.88 points to 195.63 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 2.22% or 0.68 points to trade at 30.00 in late trade. Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 0.69% or 0.90 points to end at 129.48 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 0.58% or 1.99 points to 338.70.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) which rose 6.45% to 291.67, Globe Life Inc (NYSE:GL) which was up 5.11% to settle at 89.51 and Emerson Electric Company (NYSE:EMR) which gained 4.91% to close at 112.67.

The worst performers were Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:UBER) which was down 5.68% to 66.43 in late trade, Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc (NYSE:BR) which lost 5.41% to settle at 190.46 and Match Group Inc (NASDAQ:MTCH) which was down 5.36% to 29.82 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Reborn Coffee Inc (NASDAQ:REBN) which rose 84.39% to 3.19, Safe&Green Development Corp (NASDAQ:SGD) which was up 58.81% to settle at 0.62 and Innodata Inc (NASDAQ:INOD) which gained 55.34% to close at 10.47.

The worst performers were Treace Medical Concepts Inc (NASDAQ:TMCI) which was down 62.50% to 4.17 in late trade, Seres Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MCRB) which lost 32.49% to settle at 0.75 and ETAO International Co Ltd (NASDAQ:ETAO) which was down 31.79% to 1.91 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1509 to 1329 and 76 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1751 fell and 1584 advanced, while 143 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.74% to 13.00 a new 1-month low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.34% or 7.85 to $2,316.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.07% or 0.84 to hit $79.22 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.75% or 0.62 to trade at $83.78 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.06% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.61% to 155.63.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.13% at 105.44.
